Network Trademark Domain Registration Scam

Category: Uncategorized | 38 Comments »

A number of my clients have been receiving emails similar to the two below:

From the similarity of these and others mentioned in the comments below, as well as from reading other blogs (url’s at the bottom of this page) it seems that these are an attempt to try scare you into purchasing domain names you may not want, through these companies at vastly inflated prices.

If you are really worried I suggest you get legal advice but there is nothing to stop you purchasing any available domain names yourself, either through a reputable domain name provider or a web design agency.

There many other sources on this subject via the links lower down this page…

Dear CEO & Principal,

We are a domain name registration and dispute organization in Asia, which mainly deal with the global companies’ domain name registration and internet Intellectual property right protection in Asia. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company.

On October 28st, 2009, we received an application formally. One company named “Lushui Holdings Ltd” wanted to applied for the network trademark “—hidden company name— ” and some domain names through our body.

Now we are handling with the registration of these domain names and find that the Trademark of these domain names and network trademark is identical with your company’s. So we have to confirm with you at two points:

1. If your company consign Lushui company to register these domain names and network trademark , we will send application form to them and help them finish the registration at once.
2. If your company have nothing to do with Lushui company, they maybe have other purposes to register these domain names and network trademark .

In order to deal with this issue better, please contact us by email or telephone ASAP.

Dear President&CEO,

We are a professional intellectual property right consultant organization in Asia, who mainly deal with the global domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection.
Right now we have an important issue to confirm with you. On Dec 15, 2009, we formally received an application, one company named “Shijia AP company” applied for the internet keyword “Mexel” and following domain names:
“—hidden URL’s— ”
with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names’ keyword is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned Shijia company to register these domain names with us? Or is Shijia company your business partner or distributor in Asia? If you have no relationship with this company, we assume that they have other purposes to obtain these domain names.
Currently, we have already postponed this company’s application temporarily. Therefore please let the relevant person make a confirmation with me by telephone or email as soon as possible.

Thanks & Regards,

Web Design – Running Windows on a Mac

Category: Mac, Web, Windows | No Comments »

As part of the web design process we need test the site in the most common web browsers, these include versions Internet Explorer as well as Firefox for Windows.

At SW1 I use Macs for design and development of web sites and I have XP and Vista on a couple of PC’s I built for testing but I now find I do not really use these since getting VMware Fusion, which allows me to install any number of versions of Widows I require (3.1-V7) on the Mac.

The advantages of ‘Fusion’ are that I have all my Windows installations available on my MacBook Pro & iMac which I can quickly access without rebooting into boot camp, and different installations offer me Internet Explorer up to Version 8 to test in if required. VMware Fusion is not the only option, some Mac users prefer Parallels. Either way I believe I can junk the ‘beige’ boxes soon.

A while ago I decided that my site would run on a content management system. After much thought I narrowed the options to either WordPress or Expression Engine , mainly due to both of them having powerful options while being easy to use. As web designer ‘ease of use’ is a requirement that I like to offer my clients.

While both systems have their strengths and weaknesses I decided to go for WordPress. Read the rest of this entry »
